Finding Your Passion - Have Your Dreams Been Denied By These Lies?
Finding your passion and living your dreams is a worthy goal for all individuals. Yet when we look around we see a slowing economy, rising unemployment as companies shed expense, and people still living in cardboard boxes and under bridges. When talking with individuals who are employed regarding their job satisfaction, many will make less than positive comments concerning the area of their life where they spend the majority of each week. Does this really sound like America the land of opportunity? Somehow, somewhere, our society seems to be failing.
How did this come to happen these economic and social nightmares the majority of the people are experiencing? Where did we take a wrong turn? Did we not understand what our parents or others have told us about being successful or at least about having a good life? Did we read the signs incorrectly or just make a series of bad decisions? Lets explore three of the lies contributing to the denial of your dreams.
Work hard, get a good education, and find a good job. Whoa! I'll we all heard this one multiple times over the years. I did all three of those things, and where did it get me? Downsized from the company I worked for 18 ? years surprisingly the same year I was to turn age 55. So, what did I, and many of you, not understand? Simply this: we all need work to first pay our bills to stay out of, or to get out of debt, to provide for ourselves and our families. When accepting being an employee to someone else, understand the costs to that decision. Someone tells you when to go and leave work, when you can take vacation, how much and when you will receive an increase and all this is happening while you are supporting the dream of another individual. Your work should allow you freedom in your life, to pursue your passions, and the ability to develop your talents. If we had started down the path with a little less security by following our interests to see where it would lead us, such as starting a home based business while still working around a job, life today may have allowed us the freedom and security we thought could come only from a job.
Time is money. When was the last time you heard this one probably in the last few days or weeks for those of you who are paid an hourly wage? Your supervisor was really saying GET BACK TO WORK! We each receive 86,400 seconds of time each day, whether we do anything productive or not. At midnight, all those seconds are gone, with no way to retrieve them. There are no do-overs! As long as we are still breathing, each day brings us a new allotment of seconds to use as we wish in work or play, in sitting on the couch or being out helping others who have a need. But what about money, has it happened to you, or do you know someone who lost their money? Yet instead of focusing on what they had in the past, they started over and gained equal or greater success. So lets ask the question again what is greater - time or money? The answer is time , as with time you have the ability to recreate money and build upon your experiences. But when time is all gone, its game over .
Retirement - a time when you needn't worry about or do anything. As you read that sentence, can you think of anyone who was ill-prepared for retirement - and I dont mean financially? The person who for many years had a schedule they followed religiously, perhaps to the extent they even took the same weeks each year for vacation and vacationed at the same place each year. Then one day it all stopped. They had their gold watch , their no more than 2 hour retirement party, and left their job for the last time. Sure they could go back and visit, but it no longer seemed the same as when they were working there they no longer felt a part of anything. As they no longer have a place to go, a schedule to follow - they are like a fish out of water. As they didnt take time during the preceding years to develop hobbies, interests, opportunities to serve others, a schedule for continuing to learn and educate themselves - they fall into a period of inactivity. They may sit in front of the television, or get on the nerves of their spouse if married, but essentially they are lost. They shut down vital systems in their hearts, minds, souls and spirits and with nothing left to live for, in many cases, they dont.
Finding your passion and working towards living your dreams is a step you can take at any time of your life. Its never too late to start, but its always too early to quit. If we all just knew some of the things we learned later in life and could have applied them earlier wouldnt most of us find ourselves in a different situation? But whats wrong with starting now? For individuals who are older, use your wisdom to save you some steps in your new initiative. For someone younger, I recommend looking for a mentor or someone with experience so you channel your energy to be most productive. There is only one thing worse than failing that is never trying. So lets overcome the lies we have heard, find our passion, bring our dreams back into focus, and go out there and kick some butt.
